Rowing in Tampa

The rowers you may have noticed on the Hillsborough River from December through March each year are not only students from local high schools, the Tampa Rowing Club or, the University of Tampa. It may surprise you to learn that many of these rowers are from northeastern colleges. Frigid weather, ice and snow prohibit many northern schools from training on the water in their hometowns. With rowers eager to better prepare themselves on the water for their upcoming season northern teams rowing in Tampa has become a tradition that dates back to 1941. Tampa is a city regarded by the rowing community as one of the finest winter training facilities in the world. The key amenities include warm weather, sheltered uninterrupted water, and close proximity to hotels.

The boat house that these colleges use during their stay in Tampa is located in downtown Tampa along the Hillsborough River. The facility is operated by The Stewards Foundation and is positioned at the west side of the river within the Julian B Lark Riverfront Park.

"It is not the most athletic group of rowers that
wins the race, but the team that rows the best together."
